Columbia

I attended Columbia Graduate School of Journalism from Fall of 2023 to the Spring of 2024. I took classes like “The Art of the Profile,” and “History of Journalism,” but my focus was on audio storytelling. Here are a few of the pieces I am especially proud of.

How long before you’re a New Yorker?

Columbia Graduate School of Journalism Masters Project

Completed March, 2024

This project began with a central question, How Long Before You’re a New Yorker? And evolved from there. I spent hours at Times Square, on the Staten Island Ferry, wandering through Central Park, talking with Bodega workers, restaurant owners, friends, artists, social media influencers, tour guides, and so much more, all trying to get a baseline understanding for what it meant to be a New Yorker, and if it was possible to become one.

The biggest challenge was knowing when to stop. The city is so big I could have continued reporting almost ad infinitum, and with each person I’d speak to I would gather a new idea or opinion.

But, I left the experience knowing much more about structuring a project, how to interview, things to avoid when doing audio, and ultimately I think with a digestible, successful story that puts into context the most recent wave of migration.

Fostering Family

For my "Telling True Stories in Sound” class with Daniel Alarcón, I interviewed a woman who is an only child, but grew up with hundreds – that’s right, hundreds – of foster siblings.
